Therapy times three
This morning we got up and headed back to MD Anderson. It didn't even feel like we had left the place when we got there. We headed first to occupational therapy. They spent about an hour evaluating Ben and finding out what kind of things Ben was interested in so they could help him with daily living stuff. One of the main things they are going to focus on is interacting with Raider. They even said that they are going to teach him how to change a diaper with one hand. I was excited to hear that. They also said that they are going to use some of the things he likes to do like writing, photography, and playing guitar in therapy. They were really excited about the guitar and said that just strumming would be great for strengthening his hand and fingers. So hopefully we can get his guitar down here soon. After OT he met with the physical therapist. Most of this therapy is just excersizes that will help strengthen his right side. I told him that this would be my least favorite part since it will mainly be working out, but he didn't seem to mind. The physical therapist also gave him a cane to use and had him practice walking up and down stairs. Speech therapy was our final appointment which went better than we expected. OT and PT had said that they want Ben coming three days a week for therapy so we were expecting the same thing from speech. Ben took a bunch of evaluative tests and at the end the therapist said that he was actually doing quite well with his speech. His problem seemed to be just coming up with the right words sometimes or losing his train of thought due to outside distractions. She said that she wanted to meet with us one more time to go over some tricks that he can use to help him out but that she didn't see a need to meet any more than that. It was an extremely long day meeting with therapists but we were so thankful at the end when we got to go home instead of having to go back to a hospital room. Tomorrow the hurricane is supposed to hit Houston. It is so crazy how everything shuts down during a hurricane and how all the gas stations are out of gas. We will be moving from the guest house into Marla's cousin's main house which is safer to ride out the storm. I guess the guest house usually becomes an island during hurricanes. We should be safe through the storm but we may lose power so if we do I will not be able to post on the blog. Please continue to pray for Ben and all of us during this hurricane.

It sounds like the therapy appointments went really well! That's awesome they will use the guitar in therapy. That will be such a relief! I'm looking forward to watching this one handed diaper change. Who would of thought that out of all the new babies, Ben would become the stellar diaper change expert! Brace yourselves for the hurricane! Its ironic how a natural hurricane can seem like such a tiny obstical. We love you guys and have you in our thoughts every minute of every day. Can't wait to hug you guys!
I am so glad about working with the occupational therapist with daddy stuff. This is Ben's most important job. Daddy loves you so much Raider! Make sure dad (Mark)picks up Ben's guitar for you. It must have felt so good to hear how well you are doing in speech. I am so proud of both of you. I am very nervous about the hurricane. As soon as you can get a message out that you are okay. I mean call me or dad. We are the easiest to get a hold of and the best at getting the word out. Love you, stay strong, and kiss that baby!
A quick note this morning to thank you for keeping all of us updated. I really enjoyed the pictures of the family. It's encouraging to know you now have a plan and course of action. Stay high and dry ... my prayer today is for everyone's safety.
